A Major Milestone in Subaru’s U.S. Manufacturing History
On June 27, 2025, Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) proudly celebrated the production of its 6 millionth vehicle—a 2025 Subaru Legacy Limited in Cosmic Blue Pearl. This historic achievement highlights 38 years of excellence, innovation, and Subaru’s dedication to building high-quality vehicles for the North American market.
Subaru’s Only Plant Outside Japan
SIA, located in Lafayette, Indiana, is Subaru’s only manufacturing facility outside of Japan. The plant currently assembles popular models including the Ascent, Crosstrek, Legacy, and Outback. Producing about half of all Subaru vehicles sold in North America, SIA has become a cornerstone of Subaru’s success story in the United States.
The Legacy of the Subaru Legacy
It’s fitting that the milestone vehicle is a Legacy. This model was the first Subaru ever manufactured in the U.S. when production began on September 11, 1989. Since then, the Legacy has become a key part of Subaru’s lineup, earning more than 1.3 million sales in the U.S. Over seven generations, the Legacy sedan has represented Subaru’s commitment to safety, advanced technology, and driver-focused design.
As production of the Legacy comes to a close with the 2025 model year, it marks the end of an era. The Legacy Wagon even laid the foundation for what would become the Subaru Outback—one of the brand’s most iconic vehicles.
Looking Ahead: Subaru’s Future at SIA
As Subaru adapts to changing market demands and focuses on electrification, SIA is preparing for an exciting future. U.S. production of the Subaru Forester will begin this fall, followed by the Forester Hybrid in spring 2026. With its sights set on producing its 8 millionth vehicle by November 2025, SIA remains a leader in sustainable automotive manufacturing.
