Subaru Introduces No-Cost Highway Hands-Free Driving Update for 2026 Outback Touring Models

Subaru of America, Inc. has announced a major technology enhancement for the all-new 2026 Subaru Outback Touring and Touring XT models, delivering its first-ever Highway Hands-Free Assist system through a no-cost update for eligible owners.
This advanced feature enables limited hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph on most U.S. interstate highways, offering increased comfort and convenience for long-distance travel. Vehicles sold after January 19, 2026, already include the system activated, while earlier units can receive the update at no charge.
The Highway Hands-Free Assist system builds upon Subaru’s trusted EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, integrating GPS data, 3D high-definition maps, millimeter-wave radar, and advanced camera systems. During development, Subaru engineers logged nearly 100,000 miles of real-world testing to refine system performance, ensuring accurate operation and smooth transitions between driver and vehicle control.
Once adaptive cruise control is engaged, the system can activate automatically on multi-lane highways. Features include advanced adaptive cruise control, highway lane change assist, automatic resume assist, pre-curve speed control, and emergency stop assist with safe lane selection. Drivers can easily monitor system status through the digital instrument cluster, where visual indicators confirm when hands-free functionality is active.
Driver safety remains a top priority. The system works in conjunction with Subaru’s upgraded DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System, which continuously monitors driver attention. If the driver becomes inattentive, the system will disengage and prompt the driver to resume control.
The second-generation DriverFocus® system also introduces enhanced convenience, including driver recognition for up to five users. It can automatically adjust seating position, mirrors, and climate settings based on individual preferences. A wider-angle, higher-resolution camera and infrared technology allow the system to accurately track driver awareness, even when wearing most sunglasses or eyeglasses.
This latest update reflects Subaru’s ongoing commitment to safety, innovation, and driver confidence, delivering advanced technology designed to enhance both everyday driving and long highway journeys.
